This is yet another new permission/farm which we tried for the first time today. The intel on it was solid, some of the best crop-marks I've ever seen. Once again the Archies guessing from the aerials that it might be Iron Age/Roman. It definitely had multiple phases, but like the site over the brook we think it to be Bronze Age/Iron Age. But it's early days, as the clues are limited. What we are pretty sure of is that it is NOT Roman. (Although we got a light scatter, so we are close to something) Hopefully the breadcrumbs will lead to a better spot. This will have to wait though as most of the land is under oil-seed rape.
This field had green waste on it, hence the modern burnt looking coins.
After the hunt we went & met the owners to show them the stuff. They made us laugh as they looked at our 1 day finds & said that 'looks more than all the stuff our detectorist found in all the years he hunted here'!
5 hours;
7 Roman Coins
1887 Horse Brass
1917 France's Day Pin/Medallion
A 1st C AD Roman Trumpet Derivative Brooch (Type I need)
Circa 14th C Medieval Lead Pilgrims Ampulla, vessel for Holy Water. Nice complete example dug from about 10", hence its condition!
