Hello Tneters.
I have not posted in a few months because I moved to Romania to study medicine. (Hard to get in to med school in Germany)
I finally got my Authorization to hold and use a metal detector in this country last week.
Today was my first hunt.
It was below freezing and snow covered the forest ground but I had to get out to detect!
Hunt started out slow with a few shrapnel pieces and some common coins.
After 4 hours of hunting we were ready to go back. On the way back I had to climb down a steep slope and was just swinging my detector to keep it moving..
I got a decent signal that made me stop half way down the slope.
I uncovered a silverish looking object.
First I saw this:

Then I saw an eagle head.

I pulled the object out and was disappointed because a hole in the head and the bottom part told me this object was definitely fairly modern, not Roman-age antique at least.

Back home cleaning revealed what I think (Thanks Westfront for the suggestion) Is a sabre handle. From the making I am guessing around world war 1 or maybe around the 1900's as the oldest posibility.
The hole in the head is for a decorative attachment screw or nail to fit in...
The sparing on the bottom is to fit into the ring of the hilt I believe (see below)

Definitely a heart-stopper when it was in the hole but now still a cool find, I feel.
No other signals in proximity so I was not able to retrieve the guard or blade.

Not a bad find for a first hunt here. Hopefully many more interesting things to find out there!

The snowy forest was beautiful

Just an ID update to complete the thread...
Some people from the local detectorist group helped me identify the Sabre more precisely.

It is a parade sabre of the period of Carol II King of Romania from 1930-1940 most likely used for ceremonial events.
cool piece of history..too bad it was not intact but at least the most beautiful piece of the weapon..
thanks for looking.

I bet you were waiting patiently for that authorization to come through, and as soon as you got it you had to get out and detect, regardless of the weather! That is a neat relic, even if it's not that old or associated with a battle. Maybe the rest of it is on that slope? Good luck in Romania, I'm sure you will find many ancient and interesting things there.

thanks steve, the detecting fever and need to get out was exactly as you described :laughing7:

Wow, never hunted on the snow. Only once and I left after one hour, just a minute before freezing :laughing7:

What a nice find ! The woods always look beautiful in the Winter time.

Awesome looking find, and congrats on getting to detect as well. Best of luck on the return hunt.

Desperation sure paid off my friend... good job buddy. Love that eagle head.

Whoa, I would be thrilled "almost" to death with finding something like that. I said "almost" because I'd want to hunt some more there, as I'm sure you are. Nice find.

thats us freakin coool what a display piece i want it lol

Sweet find! Glad to see you can metal detect in Romania. Do you have to repost the find to the Department of Culture?

Cheers
