Civil War buckle?

Hi, a friend of my found this dumpster diving his neighbor who is getting their house cleaned up to sell. Can someone ID it and the time period it is from? Is it old, or a repro? Thanks.

That is an Indian Wars buckle, probably 1870s. You can tell by the wide tongue on the back. if I had my book on me I could tell you the exact years they were in use.

BTW that is a darn good dumpster find!
