Today I found my best find since the stove door. Today I was digging and finding nothing but modern jars and bottles. There were two car hoods where I was at. One I had lifted up and found nothing. This time however, I hit the jackpot! I hadn't lifted up the hood and there before me lay a piece of stoneware on the top of a cast-iron parlor stove top! I was stunned but excited at the same time.

But then I noticed words on the back of the stoneware and I instantly had adrenaline pumping. I drug the thing for about 1 mile through hills and creeks. When I got back to the house I was able to make out J @J G. Lock. It turns out that they were a company in Chelsea, Mass. they were in business from 1877 to 1907.

And without further ado, here it is!

cool!- Id like to see some dump pics....if you could post a couple...

sure! Ill see if I can get some pics tomorrow.

What a beautiful and interesting find , I wonder if the surface of that cast iron could be cleaned up -? since value for the incomplete
piece would not be an issue -some here will have suggestions on what could be done .

Would that be off what they call the "Canon Stove?"

I though it was from a parlor stove but I may be way off. Any help identifying it would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, I couldn't take pics. today due to rain all day. Tomorrow I will see if the weather is better.

By request of PeteWmass, here are some pics. of the dump were I found this at.

hope this gives you a clear picture as to were I found it!

realy? I though it would be worth almost nothing due to its condition. How old do you think it is?

Go back and get that Gulf Sign!! It's a beauty!

I was thinking the same thing, even in the shape it's in it's worth something, even if it's $20, but it could be worth more it all depends on..., if it's two sided, size, how rare it is, which if it's a rare sign it could be worth much more.

That being said I have been searching the internet since seeing your photo for another sign like it and as of yet haven't seen one just like it, I have found many other ranging in price from $50 and up to $1500, I haven't seen any that are in as bad of conditions as the one posted, but some were rusted, some had bullet holes, etc., and many more looked like new, but as I said as yet I haven't seen one like the one in your picture, it could very well be a rare sign, I'll keep looking!!

The Gulf No Nox sign I have seen seem to be from 1930s to 1960s.

Thank you AU seeker for the great info. on the sign! tomorrow I will go back out there and bring it back home. I found that sign several months ago but never bothered to bring it back with me.

When you get it home clean it gently and then apply some good car wax to help keep the rust from progressing.

I still haven't seen one like it yet, I have looked/seen at least 30 different ones at present.

Thank you for the tip on cleaning it. Ill see if I can find any car wax to help with the rust. I will wash it gently and get the dirt off. Hearing you say that you've seen 30 Gulf signs but not one like mine. The suspense is killing me! :happy3:

Im searching for Gulf No-Nox signs as well. I think I may have a rare sign because I cannot find a sign like the one I found!

I brought the Gulf sign back to the house and found out that it IS double sided :headbang: Here are some pics.

Hope these pics. can clarify whether this is a rare sign or not.

When I was searching yesterday I couldn't read the lower text on the sign, is the sign actually print in reversed or is that just the way your camera downloaded the image?

Now that I'm able to read the lower text I did find one like yours online it sold at auction in 2011 for $150, this sign was not original in the sense that it's was "professionally restored" but it must of been in rather good condition to come out as nice as it did after restoration, I'm not sure if this is the actual value of one in good condition or not since this one was sold at auction and may have not been exposed it to that many collectors, I will see if I can find any other like it online.

Sorry for the words being upside down. The sign is double sided and reads "Supreme Auto Oil" below that it says "Leave less carbon"
this sign is porcelain and was made by Gulf to!

Well I have found a couple more.

Both saying it's a rare or hard to find sign, but I believe the size of 18" X 18" is why the price is not more than $150 even on a sign in good condition.

It just so happens I saw this sign on the same Matthews Auction site when I was searching for the other sign, your's would be in a little worse condition after being cleaned up, but not by much.

This sign and the other posted above from the Matthews Auction site was auctioned off in 2008, the prices could have gone up or down since that time, you would have to find one recently sold to see current prices.
