My first Button ... can anyone ID?

This is my first button find. I have no clue about buttons. It reads "Treble Gilt Stand"

I can tell you more about the backmark when I get a minute to grab my backmark book, but I can tell you that it is a civilian button cira 1830-1840s

According to my back mark book M.S. & J.D. is an unidentified maker or dealer, probably English. It has been found on military buttons but, like Dan said yours is a civilian one. Still a nice find and great pictures to aid in it's ID.

Looks like a classic British made flat button, if this 1830s is your first button, your in the right spot!

Tice's Dating Buttons book also is somewhat not positive, but says: probably Birmingham, U.K., first quarter of nineteenth century. He lists three backmarks, yours would be a fourth. (Treble Gilt was not listed)(Tice probably said Birmingham since that was a major button making area)
