A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

Well not really a "trade button" but a button received in trade for a stock 950 coil...A nice S.C. !! W.H. SMITH CO. * NEW YORK .After the trade we traveled to a field and swung for a few.I thought I found a nice one piece but after cleaning look's like a stud of some kind. The other is a clasp(?) maybe, these were found in Berryville,Va where quite a few different bullet's were found and the 27' was found in my yard about 2 hr's ago.Any thought's on the 2 piece's ?

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

Intersting finds.....wonder if the large piece is part of some horse tack? ??? :dontknow:

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

sweet button and nice finds Joe!

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

Fantastic SC button! Good trade! :headbang:

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

The tiny clasp is a sock/garter clasp or similar. The button/stud piece is probably a piece of leather decoration/horse related. I have found something similar before...will see if I can dig it out of the stacks. Sweet SC!

Best Wishes,

Buck

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

The rectangular object on the left with the rectangular holes is a harmonica reed. Nice finds.

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

Joe,

I have found that brass button with the big iron boss on some very early sites (1760's - 1770's) here in Pennsylvania.

The SC is a nice addition to your collection.

BuckleBoy,

I've never seen anything sock related with that type of clasp eye. Those are definitely ladies corset fasteners, and I've handled..........er......um.....ah............I mean dug, a bunch of 'em over the years! ;D

Steve,

You are 100% right on target! That is indeed a very early one-piece button that once had an iron shank. From my experience as well, these are the earliest of the flat style one-piece buttons from the 1700's.

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

Agreed with others that type shank can be found on very early sites. As these I found came from sites that teeter with objects found being late 17th early 18th.And depending on what sites you look them up on they can be either called early spanish military buttons or the UK site wants to call that type mounts.Quite a few under the UK site in the mount section.Either way they can be early.

Who has all the Luck! :tongue3: :laughing7: Only a WHEAT today...geez...! ::) :BangHead:
I'd say a great trade, that button is a beauty. In reading seems the other finds are also great additions to your finds...1700's...SHWEET! :headbang:

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

Nice SC button. Glad to know what those clasps are. I've been finding those for years, some with makers marks, and always thought they went on shirts. With all of the ones found around here, the ladies were very much present in the CS camps. HH

I have always thought of them as buttons, the ones I have found have always been convex and the size of a button. But I have never seen one with a shank on it so I suppose they could be some type of horse furniture :dontknow:

I'm not digging them all out, but they have various different frontal looks, not consistant with any button. Horse Furniture fits the best, as the attachment is identical to others. Some also think furniture, but horse is my best analysis :icon_thumright:

Re: A Trade Button and some Recent Dig's

Nice SC button with a good backmark too. The iron shank piece is early but I have to disagree about them being buttons let alone Spanish military buttons. I've dug dozens of them from 18th century English colonists cellarholes in CT and always considered them to be decorative tacks. These are almost always dug with just a rust spot left in the lug on the back, but here's one that still has most of the "nail" part still intact. It's not all there but enough is to see it's clearly not a loop for a button.... Dave

Thank-you, I always knew the Spanish thing was a red herrin. I knew they were not buttons, but not 100% sure if they were furniture or horse related, either way I get loads of them over here with no other Spanish stuff
