Today we were out on 4 different fields for 6 hours (12 man hours), the first 2 targets were a bust, the second two were known sites (where Dad got the Knife handle etc..)

We started the 3rd field by the Church (previously produced Roman-Medieval) at the opposite end to the Church & my plan was to zig-zag over where I thought an old footpath used to lead to the Church, & hopefully pick up a medieval item/coin. When I got to the middle of the field I lucked into my best find in a long time, I instantly recognized it from a couple of books I have, but always thought it an impossible find;
Roman Legionaries Helmet Handle with two opposed Dolphins (1 is bust) :o
Only 1 similar recorded on the UKDFD & 1 on the PAS:

UPDATE: these are now thought to be box or furniture handles.

After gridding the area where it came from with no further finds & detecting close to the Church with little finds other than a couple of nice Buckles & a cracking Jetton, we decided to move to a nearby field (where Dad had his Handle).
In the last hour on this field & for a little time on the previous field we were joined by Land-Mag our 3rd team member, & we began to get a few Roman Bronzes & some interesting pottery. Now the funny part, I let out my rallying cry 'come-on the Roman Silver' & I (with my 2 witnesses) only detected another 20yards on the same run & got one of the nicest Roman Silvers in a long while :laughing9: Now this is where Jimmy-UK enters stage left, & I know what your thinking Jimmy - Its a Juilian II circa AD360 :hello: :laughing7: :icon_profileleft:What are the odds... :icon_profileright:(Also I know what Hammereds thinking about the Bell Dad got)
What an end to the day, after several months without a Roman Silver & on land which we have never had one from, the Crusader call gets the goods :icon_pirat:
Dad also dug our first Roman Iron Spearhead. :icon_thumright:

Dad did, it's the style I thought you may have found before I saw yours. This one is slightly more common than yours. :thumbsup:
But still in great nick & one of our better examples :)

another cracking haul, well done your Dad for recovering the spear, I wonder how many decent finds i have left in the ground, not digging them up because they are iron

This land has been night hawked for many years & although 1 of them threaten one of the owners, they decided to trust our team & find out what was on their land.
When we do good areas, we are in it for the long haul (minimum of 10 years), so we clear anything that could mask other good signals. I learnt my lesson many years ago after digging a horseshoe & continuing on, because right next to it was a Gold Coin (dug by Dad) :wink: Many of the finds I get in these trashy fields are in with multiple targets which is why the Hawkers have missed them. Soon they realise we clear everything & we have such a bad name with them, that we have the mental edge. :thumbsup:
