Found this old Police Badge today. It appears to be plated copper and most of the plating is gone. This area in Pueblo, Colorado dates back to 1871. Turns out Doc Holliday was known to pass through Pueblo. Detector used was the Garrett Ace 250.
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!

I soaked it in some olive oil..and then used my fingernail to remove the ridge seen on the back. I believe the badge was attached to the wearers clothing with a pin that ran down in the vertical. I can not see any makers mark on the back and am guessing the pin was made of iron as it seems to have completely dissolved. The front does show some scroll work in the center and near the points. I am afraid to clean it anymore as I have no clue as to its value and origins.

It may be too generic. Here's a somewhat similar one worn by the San Jose Auxiliary Police formed the day after the Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 is shown here as # 7:

A clue (word or symbol) may lie in the area between the words Special and Police on your badge.

ecmjamsit,

Your badge is beautiful too. The small scrolls on the face are called "dingbats" in the badge collecting world. Yours apparently had what is called a "saddle pin, or saddle blanket pin" on the reverse. It looked like an antique diaper pin attached to the back of the badge by an oval or rectangular plate. Sweet find. Cub

most awesome. congrats!
