Cones And Loafstones

(I was asked to show some of my older pieces so I'm going to bump up a few of my posts so they can see them rather than post them again)




I took some new pictures of some of my better Cones and Loafstones the other day and thought I'd go ahaed and share them. There is lots of specualtion as to what function these oddities preformed and any of them could be true, but we will probably never know for sure until one is found in context with something that would prove defininitive as to their use.

Two of the Loafstones and one Cone are made from Hematite. The other Cone is a brownish hardstone and I'm not 100% sure what type of stone it is. The other Loafstone is made from Granite. The Loafstone in the middle and the one on the left in the front row and the Hematite Cone are all personal finds. The Hardstone Cone was a Flea Market find for $8 and the other Loafstone was bought at a local auction.

I've included some close ups of the two Cones and a Loafstone. I'll put some close ups of the other Loafstones in the next post.

If anyone else has any of these neat little artifacts then feel free to post them for us to see.

Lots of speculation, but nothing dinfinitive. I have heard that Loafstones were used as Atl-Atl weights.

Steve I have found roughly a dozen of those loaf stones. I new they were used for something. But I left them on the ground. Most of them are chipped and shatter on one end.

I have a couple but until I realized they were man made, I threw a few down.

Keith, no offense, but I highly doubt you have found that many Loafstones. These are rare items and I've only found the ones you see here and a couple broken ones in 45 years of collecting. Do you have pictures of what you think are Loafstones? I'd like to see them.

Here are a couple of pcs, plus some I had tossed to the side at a site that I retrieved Sunday. Sorry it took so long to respond to this post. you guys really know your stuff, and I am having trouble staying up with the posts/replies. These are probably just field rocks. And I really put my foot in mouth on this subject/as I have only been rockin for a year now. The piece in the middle is 4 inches in diameter. Thanks Keith.

Sorry Keith, those are all natural looking stones to me. If anything, they may be Hammerstones, but not Cones or Loafstones.
