I have finally given in to a long-standing urge/desire and want to buy a detector. Can't afford a "top-of-the-line" machine, but would like to be able to effectively work the beaches and woods of Cape Cod, where I have recently moved (I have done my research and I am familiar with the prohibitions of the National Seashore). Can anyone recommend a good machine in the $100 - $400 range. Thanks in advance for your help.

In the $100 to $400 range, for beach and woods, I'd recommend a Garrett Ace 250. Easy to use, very reliable, and produces great results. $220 at Amazon and authorized Garrett dealers. Get a $12 rain cover for the control head, and you'll be good to go.

Hi, depnding on how you want to work the beaches, the Ace 350 is a pretty decent detector within your budeget range but it works best on the dry areas of the beach rather than wet sand near the water. In the dry areas it works very well for us. It is also really good at finding coins at parks too. The biggest downside is that it is not waterproof like the At Pro, but that model is a bit higher than your budget range. You may want to consider holding off till you can get the Pro as it may be more flexible as it has ground balancing feature that will help in the wet areas of the beach, although it will never work as well as a specific beach designed detector, it is definately useable at the beach and more flexible in the woods and stream areas too.

Also you should consider buying a pro pointer with whatever detector you buy as it is almost a necessity when detecting. i recommend the Garrett model.

One other thing, you should contact Bart at Big Boys Hobbies as he is terrific and offers great service on detecting equipment.

Good luck to you.

Hi Nevol,I would recommend the Tesoro Silver Umax. It costs about $255, has 2 knobs and toggle switch. It is simple to learn and it has a great discrimination and good depth. As you become more experienced you'll probably want to buy a fancier detector, but you'll want to always keep the Silver.I carry one with me as I travel and it works everywhere I've been; beach, mountains, desert. And, it has a lifetime warranty.Good luck in your choice.

Thanks to everyone for the informative responses.
