You all seen them. Those pvc/abs contraptions that suck sand and gravel from creek bottoms. I like the one that discharges directly into a bucket via a hose but I don't fully understand the flapper valve system and what stock plumbing part they use. Does anyone have a link or plans that I could follow so I could build one?

thanks in advance-

I built mine using two of the sump pump flapper valves from Lowes. I did have to modify the discharge check valve so it would not get clogged with sand and gravel and stick open. http://www.lowes.com/pd_141731-1564...L=/pl__0__s?Ntt=check+valve&page=2&facetInfo=

Or you can get everything you need at: http://www.gold-n-sand.com/#/pump-diy-kit/4536600563 :icon_thumleft:

Just the check valves and suction valve leather: http://www.gold-n-sand.com/#/spare-parts/4540110127

I know it is ridiculous, but I recall hearing that there was some grief given at one time, for using these?I dont know....I know what I would say,but just beware

According to my sources It is legal for use in California because it is non-motorized and therefore not subject to SB 670 :icon_thumleft:
Discretion is always the best policy in any case.

From Mark Stopher

It is DFG’s view that operation of your hand powered dredge is not a
violation of SB 670. Although you propose to operate it in a live
stream, and it does rely on a vacuum to remove material from the bed of
the stream, Fish and Game Code section 5653.1(d) states ” This section
does not prohibit or restrict nonmotorized recreational mining
activities, including panning for gold”.

While a portion of the Code arguably applies to your proposed actions,
the quoted subsection provides an exception for nonmotorized dredging.
