Got a medicine while metal detecting today. It says "Mrs Winslows soothing syrup "
"Anglo American drug co."
"Successors to"
"Curtis & perkins"
" proprietors"
After researching it turns out this was for crying babies and was almost all morphine and alcohol !! It killed thousands of babies and a teaspoonful was enough to kill a child !! Baby take medicine, baby go to sleep, baby no wake up !! 20210123_181424.jpg

Cool bottle Bart, always liked old glass.
Kind of glad it wasn't around when I was a lad-I wouldn't be here today as Ma liked the script pills and fed us kids lots of crap.

Good ole Mrs. Winslow.......one of many quack medicines that made you feel lots better.......or dead. I like bottles like that with lots of embossing, nice find.

Morphine and alcohol pepper....I bet alot of moms and dads were sneaking a sip here and there !!

Cool bottle Bart. I have one too, it says Mrs. Wilson's soothing syrup The Anglo American Drug Co Successors to Curtis & Perkins Proprietors. On the bottom is the number 22. I dug this one on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Mrs Winslows.jpg

Yup crusty....thats the baby killer syrup !! Says in the article they were selling 1.5 million every year.....guess there pretty common but I still love it !!

Great article, I hadn't seen that before. Thanks for posting it.

What a great but scary story Bart. Well done you guys once again. HH

I remember my aunt and uncle would give their three kids something before driving to north carolina. They slept the whole trip, not even bathroom or food breaks. Maybe Mrs. Wilsons’ work?

:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7: LOL !!

Cool looking bottle. Horrific history. Definitely a conversation piece. Congratulations, Bart.

Great bottle find Bart, it's always a bonus when a complete bottle turns up while you're detecting.
My favourite bottle finds to make, are the old pottery ink pots.

Here's a pic of a bottle and an ink I found after the arkies dug an old pioneer homestead site.
It never ceases to amaze me what the arkies miss. :laughing7:
Dave

Thank you WD....Thank you antiquarian dave...I love the smaller medicines....space savers for displaying. Great to get a whole one while digging a target !!

A local antique shop has one of those for 30 dollars. She told me the baby killer story.

over the years digging bottles, over 30 year, I figure any bottle that was made before 1910, was just a booze bottle in disguise, 90 percent of the medicine were haha
