Several Possibilities come to Mind.
They had no Money.
Their money meant more to them then life itself.
the Money was well hidden In the walls.

or buried
in the Basement or Outside & still there.

Stories like this Suggest to me unless they felt these people would kill them the second they had the money, why would they take a beating over it ?

It could also mean that they gave them the money and they killed them to keep them from giving away who stole the money. It was probably someone they knew.
