Thank God, I'm finally over the disappointment and frustration. Posting these maps will set me free at last. Excerpts from the authoritative account are compiled as follows: "As proof of his avarice, there was the steel box which a Bronx iron worker, Timothy Kiele, constructed to his specifications. It was 3'x2'x18".Within this box, on a April night in 1933, the Dutchman placed approximately seven million dollars in thousand dollar bills, diamonds, jewelry, gold coin and various portable wealth. Eight witnesses watched him make this 'deposit' in his Bridgeport, CT hideout after a federal grand jury indicted him for income tax evasion. After packing the box, the Dutchman and Lulu placed it in the trunk of a big Packard, along with a pick and shovel. Then with Lulu behind the wheel, they sped westward to the Hudson River, and north to Kingston, N.Y., where they took a side road leading to the Catskill Mountains. Approaching Phoenicia, the Dutchman order Lulu to stop the car. Near a stand of stately pine trees on the bank of the Esopus Creek they buried the steel box." As for the map,"The map showed the stand of tall pine trees on the creek bank. A cross was maked at the foot of one of the trees. In the background, near a road marked 'to Phoenicia' was a rough drawing of a one-story shack-like structure with a sign on it, on which Lulu had lettered 'Lodging for Hunters and Fishermen."
The shack-like structure is the Boiceville Inn, which still stands today, and was the landmark for the turnoff. Schultz was able to drive down to the abandoned section of Boiceville, cross the tracks, then drive along the old rail bed to a spot adjacent to the pine grove, from where it was a very short carry to the burial site.
