Not exactly the 'treasure' the MD'er was trying to find
THOROLD (Ontario) — Skeletal remains were found in a remote area of Thorold on Sunday by an amateur historian.
Niagara Regional Police responded to the scene when the historian made the discovery during a search for metal artifcats near the Welland Canal.
Police say the remains are of an “unknown origin” at this time and have been sent to Hamilton General Hospital to be examined by a forensic pathologist.
Foul play is not suspected, however, the investigation is still ongoing pending the results of the forensic examination, police said.
The area where the discovery was made is used by the Welland Canal as a ponding area to gather water for filling the locks of the canal. The area is under water for most of the year and was only accessible due to the low water level at the time.
The area where the remains were discovered had also been the location of a church in the early 1800s.
By the mid- to late-1800s the church had been abandoned to make way for the third Welland Canal. The area has been used as a ponding area by the Welland Canal since 1926 and is still in use today.
