While I have had reasonable success with my home made plastic sand scoop, I decided to upgrade
to a stainless model with a handle. But oh! the sticker shock :(
With the economy the way it is the NZ dollar is now worth about 50c US. Which means to buy
a top of the line stainless scoop would cost me about NZ$440 including freight to NZ.
So I decided to make one, and using a picture of a model I liked, I set about it.
First I made a paper one using secret origami techniques handed down over the ages. ???

Then a cardboard one to mark out the dimensions for transfer to the metal.

Folded it up to confirm the layout and measurements were pleasing.

Then with the help of a metal working friend, drilled and drilled and drilled, folded and welded
and came up with this.

Nice work! Looks like it will come in pretty handy....

nice job! I take it that's stainless steel and not just steel with a matte finish?

It is all stainless steel. I have used it a few times since building it and it works well.
I would probably raise the top edge of the 'foot pad', towards the u-bolt to give
it more levering strength if I build another.

I really enjoyed my week in N.Z. (Auckland) and wanted to take my MD. All those beaches were packed in Jan. Maybe next time. Our son married a N.Z. girl, and we went to the wedding. Did you ever notice all those crazy people driving on the wrong side of the road?

Glad you enjoyed your stay.. I'm down in the South Island, not so crowded.
Yep.. driving on the wrong side has really caught on here.
Did you notice the steering wheels on the wrong side too?
Bet you got in the wrong door at least once ;D

That scoop looks GREAT!

Have 2 questions.

1) How many hrs. to drill and clean up holes, bend and weld?

2) What kind of handle did you use?

Gosh, I bet you could even cut firewood for the bonfire with that.
Nice copy. LOL
