Found this detecting in the woods yesterday. It's about 2 1/2" long with some kind of outdoor scene on one side. I couldn't find any other markings on it so I had it tested. Turned out to be 14k gold. Any comments on what it is or how old it is are appreciated.

wow that is beautiful. being intact, I would tend to believe the value as an antique would exceed melt value. that is really cool. congrats!

I agree not scrap. Judging by the size of the chain I would guess wrist or ankle.

I like the needle holder idea, seems plausible. It had to be custom made I think, for someone of means back in the day.

Absolutley beautiful piece and the find of a lifetime, that deserves a banner!

Is it lined on the inside?

I agree with thommo59 This is a very important find - solid 14K with all that engraving - I have never in my 6 years on this site seen a
solid gold box or container (with the exception of a few gold pocket watches) I'm going BANNER!

Could it be a Mezuzah - A prayer container (Jewish , I think ) I like the needle case for a chatelaine idea too ! Great Find !
I did find it in a patch of woods next to a synagouge

It looks like it has a hinge on one side, maybe if you open the container it will give you some more clues... awesome find.. congrats!!

No clue what it is other then one of the prettiest pieces I've seen listed on here. Very Very nice!!!

That's a fantastic find! I'm waiting to see what this is, a few possible IDs have been suggested. I'm seeing banner in your future!

The inside is plain

I first thought Mezuzah but could not find any the were suspended that way or the chatelaine either? It obviously looks to be hand tooled. Does the top or bottom have any criss cross design on it? If it does I would say a match safe. What ever it is the workmanship is very nice. What is the outdoor scene?

The way the lid hinges off to the side I think makes the pencil theory a bit difficult - In light of it's proximity to the synagogue I'm
leaning more Mezuzah - but clearly this is going to generate some excellent discussion - What a find !

How about an antique snuff holder?

Wow! :notworthy: Beautiful, intact & appears totally undamaged! :occasion16::wav::occasion16:

Hope you keep it or sell to collector rather than have it melted down as it seems top quality item! Andi
