Bought this along with a bunch of other large cents the other day and am trying to find out how to identify what variety the coin is. It does have the lettered edge. Any input would be appreciated
I also have this posted in the coins category
Giving it a quick look in Breens book, it appears to be a Sheldon 75 variety Rarity 3, "Top of 5 Buried in bust" and Double leaves at top of right branch on Rev are the main distinguishing attributes...................
Whereas all 1794 cents have a lettered edge, only a small minority of 1795 cents have the lettered edge, and they trade at a premium. Almost all of the cents from this year are the plain edge, especially varieties S-76 and S-78. A S-75 like the one you found will cost a collector in the ballpark of $500, maybe a little more, even with the corrosion.
