1858 Jefferson Davis "Hardee Hat" Eagle Pin

This is probably one of the most significant, and most likely, a once in a lifetime Relic find for me. It's in amazing condition considering it's been in the ground for around 156 years and I may never top this because it is a Hat Pin that was issued to Enlisted Men only, who were required to wear it as a part of their Dress Uniform. It was used to decorate and pin the side brim of their Felt Hat upright to the side of the main body of the hat as you will see in the pics below.

Also, I recovered many nice CW era bullets, 3 Eagle Buttons (one Great Coat Button which is pre Civil War), the frame of a pocket watch with winding key, a big carved lead square nail which was made as a prank by bored soldiers who tossed it into the nail bucket for the builders to try to use, and a few deteriorated bullet casings.

What a GREAT Day we had...the hunting was intense, my friends were there sharing the experience, and the finds were special and numerous.

Amazing, awesome find.

I like those early tie ring Sharps bullets. Good job!

Super find!! Congratulations.....

That is indeed a classic relic , a piece of history !

That Hardee hat pin is a great find. Have hunted many of the hats name sakes routes when he with the Army of Tennessee. I have only seen one pin found in poor condition. That is an amazing find in excellent condition. What a great hunt.
I think the Hardee hat was used by both sides but mostly by our Northern brothers. It was a dashing item to wear in it's day.

That is a great recovery! Congrats!

Nice finds! Congrats!

That is a very nice find. Those thin brass hat pins just don't come out of the ground looking like that very often.

wow that hat pin is spectacular! nice assortment of finds other than that, as well :) had a good chuckle at the lead nail haha... that would have been a great practical joke!

I know, I was shocked because we have dug many thin brass items and buttons that were pretty rough. I was in a new spot when I found the hat pin and Great Coat button close together, so apparently the soil there is better for relics...think I'll go back to that spot next Saturday.

Thanks!

Congrats Bigfootokie ,

Thank you. I knew it had to be rare and special, but it's just beginning to sink in how fortunate I am to have recovered it in one piece without defects or damage. :occasion14:
