Detector(s) used
Garrett GTI 2500, Fisher Gold Bug 2, Minelab SDC 2300, Minelab GM 1000
So today, eight days into owning a detector I found my first dollar coin. It isn't silver, old, or anything special, but I was very happy nonetheless. I haven't gotten so excited over a single dollar since back in the tooth fairy days. :laughing7:

EDIT: After seeing that guys GW find, my simple dollar find has become far less thrilling.

Nice find. You didn't show a pic of the back. Looks more like it might be a token, I coundn't find it in my coinage book.

It's a dollar.Congrats on you're first one. It's still exciting as H#ll being you're first one.I'll bet you were grinning from ear to ear when you found it.

It's a 2008 John Quincy Adams dollar. I found it under a park bench at about 4 inches.

And yes, I was grinning ear to ear. I mean, it's only a dollar, and I was all kinds of giddy.

Funny thing was that the bench was near a big sand tot-lot. When I arrived I noticed fresh footprints in the damp sand (it's been raining like mad here these past few days) and some holes. Someone how just been through with a machine so I abandoned the lot and moved off into the field. The coin was my very first signal. After it I grabbed about another dollar in clad in all of about 30 feet. Then this old timer rolls up on a bicycle with a detector strapped across the front and says, "I did that sandbox just an hour ago." :laughing7: He was a real nice fellow and we talked for about 20 minutes before going our separate ways. He had a pouch full of clad that he had grabbed from the 4 or 5 sand boxes in this giant park. For the second time in a week I was 45 minutes late to the diggings. I need to work on my timing.

You should see what I go through to get 100 dirty pennies. It is not pretty. I have scars.

I've found a couple of those myself, and it puts a grin on my face everytime. A dollar is a dollar, and this one you can spend as opposed to putting it away in your collection. :laughing7:

last year was my first year and i found 12, it is better than most of the silver rings i found. Never believe just because someone else has been there, it is cleaned out, I may be wrong but I think everyone misses stuff.

I found one the year before. If we could only encourage more people to carry them rather then pennies.....

That's what I think is neat about the postings from the hunters that live in Canada, all of those $1 and $2 coins...it makes hunting more profitable....also brings you closer to being able to buy another machine.

Cool find.

hey, congrats on your first dollar!!!! I haven't reached that yet. I will someday. I love this hobby and I love all the junk too. Good Luck to you and happy hunting!

Nice GW butt... I mean Quincy dollar. ;D You should frame it and 10 years from now it will be good for a laugh, and probably some fond memories of starting out.

Great find, I have never seen that coin in circulation. I know it was thrilling to have found your first one. Keep up the good work and have fun doing it.

Congrats on the first dollar coin. :icon_thumright: The first one is always the best.
You got a dollar from the tooth fairy??? She owes me 85 cents per tooth, the deadbeat.

So your (now) 10 day old detector just got a dollar cheaper. :icon_thumright: HH!

:D ;D :laughing7:

$1 coin would improve my coin count value :icon_thumright:

Actually, I also have ulcers, but those are not from the pennies, those are from the pulltabs.

I can imagine that there are some out there with hemorrhoids because of all that can slaw. :tongue3: :laughing9:

Nice find. Not only have I never found a new dollar, or old for that matter, I never even got one in change from the stores I shop. They just aren't very well circulated. I would say that find is ever rarer than finding an old silver dollar. Not in value, just in number.

Great find, but is it just me, or are American coins getting just plain ugly? The backs now look like casino gaming tokens. 1916 was a damn good year for coin designs, downhill ever since.
