Locations to best MD

Im kind of new to the whole MDing thing... I've been playing with my Grandpa's MD around the house and came up with a 1950s Boy Scout Pin and my, supposedly per grandmother, Great Grandmother's only piece of silver in 1933... a Fork. But it kind of makes me want to look in other places.

Where are some general areas... ex. schools, under/around trees,parks,etc ... to look for items of some worth?
And are there any intresting places to look for Civil War Relics or Revolutionary War Relics that is not illegal to search without Direct premission?

I am doing well.. I am in Charlotte, NC.

Today I messed around in the yard a little and came up with an OLD A-7 Autolite spark plug... so old barbed wire, and what may be a musket ball. I havent really confirmed the whole musket round Ive got to let my good friend and Civil War Reenactor look at it, he works down at Latta Plantation.

I am really intrested in finding coins, civil war relics, etc but I have no clue where to look for things like that.
