This was a very cool find. Its an original 1700s wooden crate complete with 5 whole case gin bottles with pig snout tops and pontil bases. The crate has a lot of unique features including strap hinges, a keyhole (and missing locking mechanism), rosehead nails, and hand wrought iron handles. The crate and its contents were found hidden away in an outbuilding at an early 1700s homesite. This is how bottles of gin were transported by ship across the Atlantic during colonial times. Maybe with a little luck, I can someday fill the remaining 4 slots from my future colonial trash pit digs.

Got a few of the bottles myself but I don't think I've seen the case before. :thumbsup:

Hi Very nice square gins Cork top with hand tooled rim ,refered to as "Pig Snout Tops" date from late 1790 -1830.

Wow.

Finds like this always make me wonder about what is still out there and what has been lost to development, carelessness, and ignorance.

Now that is a really nice collection of case gins. Dug lots of newer type from the 1880's on, but nothing that old intact. :icon_thumright:
