Questions Regarding Heavy Mineral Concentrators
Hey Folks
I am looking to build a concentrator for sampling glacial till. I've seen a small portable one before, but I didn't have the wherewithall to take a photo of it to build my own. I know where I might run into the guy who has it, but I am not going to be able to meet up with him at the prospectors monthly meeting as it is @ the same time I have have classes. I am also not sure if he would even have it in the city with him, if he would even be at the meeting or would be willing to let me have a second look at it. To top it off this gentleman told me that had the unit had been build for him by a friend.
I have found some plans online, but they just don't seem to match what he had and seem to be a lot bigger (I could be wrong though).
Let me describe it and if anyone knows what the heck I am talking about please feel free to pipe up.
The unit was approx 12-14" in diameter, it sat in water.
It seemed to be like a funnel and was mounted above a ring stand that was attached somehow with springs.
My understanding is that the top half had some kind of mechanical device what would shake it, much like a shaker table (or manually shaken) this would cause the sand size pre-classified materials to sort onto some kind of catch pad underneath.
I don't remember if there was a screen in between or not.
However, what would basically happen is the blacksand, and other heavier minerals/material would move/settle to the center while the lighter materials would end up on the edge. That way one could get a good look at what minerals were present etc.
The prospector was using this to sample glacial till for kimberlite indicator minerals, small diamonds or any other valuable minerals. But specifically he stated he was going for diamonds.
I am looking to build a similar type jig for myself for well, obvious reasons....darn handy tool.
I thought about getting or building a sluice myself as I have a mig that I can do Al welding with, but it doesn't seem like an efficient solution to sample glacial till with, the sluice project will be my next project.
I've tried a pile of different google searches and none has really worked out in regards to getting me at lease a picture of something closely resembling this jig concentrator, or even a drawing that I can go off of.
Anyone have any ideas or even know what the heck I am talking about?
Thanks!
