Part of sampling is locating the bedrock on your claim, and knowing how much overburden you'll need to move. Always sample from the pay gravel on the bedrock.
Check the layout and slope of the area. If the bedrock, which is where you are headed, is WAY down, you may consider a new place. If you think the bedrock may be less than 6 feet, you can make an auger to confirm the depth. Using a 3/8 ths inch steel rod, have someone weld on a small flange at the bottom and a "T" handle at the top. Work this round and round -back and forth, to reach bedrock. If it is less than 6 feet deep, consider going for it. Too deep for sampling for me anymore! TTC
