Just started detecting and found on my first day out seven wheat pennies and a few recent clad coins....What in your opinion is the best way clean up wheat pennies.....Or for that matter coins in general....Thanks for the advice!

Depends on what exactly needs cleaning off of them. A soak in olive oil usually works for packed on dirt and grime. Cut a potato in half and place the wheatie in there, close it back up for a day or two, nastier crud will come off.

Any coin worth anything that you may want to sell someday, just leave it alone. If its worth enough, send it to a conservator.

Some use electrolysis on this forum, check out some of the posts in the preservation and cleaning section and you'll find out bunches!

Warm water and a soft toothbrush never hurt any coin. Start with that. Old coppers can be soaked in olive oil.
