Depends on what exactly needs cleaning off of them. A soak in olive oil usually works for packed on dirt and grime. Cut a potato in half and place the wheatie in there, close it back up for a day or two, nastier crud will come off.

Any coin worth anything that you may want to sell someday, just leave it alone. If its worth enough, send it to a conservator.

Some use electrolysis on this forum, check out some of the posts in the preservation and cleaning section and you'll find out bunches! :)
 

Warm water and a soft toothbrush never hurt any coin. Start with that. Old coppers can be soaked in olive oil.
