Re: good condition '1788 Massachusetts Colonial Copper' good condition

Awesome Find!! I would have this coin graded by PCGS or ANACS Grading service. You will get the most money out of it if it is graded by a professional grading service.

Below is a link to an auction for a similar condition coin and it sold for around $50 ungraded. The coin in the auction also looks cleaned in the pictures and that hurts the value.

Hope this helps.

Good ID, but bad advice. The coin is a reproduction.

Sorry for the Bad Advice. How can we tell it is fake?? Is the one in the auction a fake too?? I was going to say make sure it is real but forgot to do that. I will just let others give advice in the future on things I don't know about.

I did a little more research and found there are several varieties from the 1788 series. Below is the link with more info.

Re: good condition '1788 Massachusetts Colonial Copper' good condition

Here is another that sold for around $82 it is in a little bit lower grade than the coin the thread is about.

Here is one more that did not sell but was guaranteed genuine and had the best pictures. They were asking linke $300 - $400 for it. I don't think it was graded by a professional grading service though.

I would really like to know how to tell they are reproduction. And which coin or coins in this thread are the reproduction?

Thanks for the help, Kris

Yes, the Ebay one is fake also. Don't worry about the "bad advice", it's obvious you were just trying to help.

Some are easy to tell like the one in question in this thread, and others are not so easy. For these particular links the first one is tough to tell, and I would want to see better pics, but the seller is sort of giving a disclaimer that it could be fake. (and it probably is) The 2nd I believe probably is legit because it looks ok, and the seller seems good. I would not place any huge bets just looking for 30 seconds at each.

The reason the one above is clearly fake is the lettering. It's nothing near the quality of a genuine one.

This I believe is the same one.

It was actually pretty lucky that you correctly ID'ed it with a link to another fake. ;D

Re: good condition '1788 Massachusetts Colonial Copper' good condition

By the way.... For genuine ones the variety is a huge factor in determining the value. So just because a nice looking one does not get the same money as a poor one at auction, doesn't necessarily mean the nice one was fake. (just not as rare)

Yup fake. Got one of those too. I had it for 40 years. So an old fake. ha

Old enough that it's probably collectible. Hard to make sense of things sometimes.

I have the same coin only it has copy stamped into it.
