Wooooo old thread. Getting ready to do some test panning at Hell run and Slippery rock creek today. Rumor has it that there has been some sub-100 mesh found in the area, and allegedly some gemstone
This is ofcourse all anecdotal and hear-say. If i have any luck I'll post my results.
Thanks. Yes, it's an old thread but I'm still paying attention to it, and I'd love to see your results! Good luck!

Late on the results lol. Didn't find any color, but i did find a few smaller garnet shards and some black sand. I only panned for about a half hour because im a dummy and forgot my panning gloves and that water is hand numbing. Plenty of fishy looking spots to get a shovel into for some more test panning.

Wow I can’t believe this post is still here... it’s been a while since I posted and checked the forum. I have found gold in the Hell run. Best gold is up by the parking lot off of Shaffer Rd. Right next to the lot the creek is loaded with vanport limestone bedrock, and the cracks are wonderful little gold catchers. Bring a hand gold dredge and a pan. Found some decent pieces in those cracks, as well as a mercury dime once. Let me know next time you plan to check it out, and I can meet you there.

I think there could be a few places down stream from Eckert Bridge that could be interesting.

I live very close to the mill and I have panned my small creek. Few gold flecks found. Not worth keeping. Never found anything big. Found gold veins in quartz though

I was thinking the same thing. Was kicking around the idea of parking down by the Harris bridge and doing a little crevicing this weekend, maybe some sluicing if im feeling like a little bit of self abuse. Theres a ton of big cracks in the rock that are filled up to the brim with material that are begging to be scraped out.

Ill post up some results if i end up making it, provided the water level isnt sky high.

Well, had a positive result. Found one small flake. However it took about 20 pans to find it. I dug around on some crevices and sandstone pockets. Decent amount of black sand and some garnet shards. Will definitely need a mini hand suction dredge to really clean out the crevices, but there is gold there. Apologies for the blurry pic, 20200718_124613.jpg

There is gold in the Slippery Rock Creek. I have also found flakes in the Hell Run (tributary). If anyone is interested in the "areas" I have found gold in the McConnell's Mill area, just let me know... Maybe I can give you the coordinates or we can meet up, as I live only minutes from the Mill.
I know this is an old post but I am curious about the area as well. I have always had a curiosity about certain things including gold panning. Throughout my life I have made some strange discoveries. I am from Plum Boro and now live in Shaler. When I was younger I hung out with a girl from school down the road from me. She had woods on the side of her house, almost like a forest with a stream. It was a natural stream from what I remember. Anyways she told me that her and her brother found crabs in the stream. I was thinking she mistook a "crab" from a crayfish. So we went back there and in the stream I found a crab claw. It was blue or purple. I couldn't believe it! So I looked further. There was green moss on the tree bark. I removed the bark and sure enough there was a crab about the size of a quarter maybe a little bigger. I am shocked to this day and know one believes me when i tell the story. I also have found seashells on the road near me. Complete darkness while walking to work, my subconscious mind just went to work. As I found one, shortly after I found a bigger one. This was right next to a Friary on the side of the road. The biggest one was about the size of a dime. These were not snail shells.

So I was wondering if you could share coordinates with me or perhaps meet up sometime. My wife is interested as well, she thinks it may be exciting. But, she is probably interested because she can tell I am excited. I am interested in Hells Run as well. I have studied maps somewhat and learned what others have said about the glacial activity stopping before they reached Pittsburgh. Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoyed my strange stories lol. Do you have any updates on your findings? Also do people find it odd if you show up in the area with gold pans or slices? Any help would be very appreciated thank you!

What creek were you referring to if you don't mind me asking? I'm new at this and looking at trying some different areas. Thank you!
